After six decades Mercian Cycles workshop has moved.

Through the years there were a number of locations in Derby for the shop, the frame building workshop and sprayshop. But since about 1965 the frame building and painting was taking place at the Pontefract Street workshop.

Cara Grimwade is soon to take on one of the most extreme ‘triathlons’ we have heard of.

Mercian is proud to play its part in Greg James’ upcoming awesome challenge for Comic Relief. 

Framebuilder Tim took the chance to head out on the Ventura All-road bike to go and pick up some dropouts from Bear Frame Supplies. An ideal opportunity to capture some video of the custom steel Ventura out on the gravel trails of the Derbyshire Peak District.

To celebrate Derby County’s 50th anniversary title win – and Mercian’s 80th – we built a one-off Superlight road bike, raising nearly £4,000 for the Derby County Community Trust. A true Derby icon, made in Derby.

To help mark our 80th year, we’re proudly supporting British para-cyclist Calum O’Neill on his journey to LA 2028 with a custom-built Mercian trike.

Dave’s custom Ventura Allroad – built for his Paris-to-Nice charity ride and dedicated to his son, Conor – has already raised over €21,000 for mental health charity Aware.

Chris was the first to respond to the call for photo's with the above picture.

The bike is almost finished, i might swap the chainset from Sugino to Campag but that will be after the next (first) lottery win at the moment.

I just wanted to send pictures of my favorite bike, my KOM. I bought this beautiful frame second hand in really bad shape. It had a lot of missing paint, rust and it's chainstays were damaged by a over-tightend kickstand. As far as I can tell it was built in 2002, so it has seen a lot of action.

Took my KOM for its maiden voyage on the infamous Inishowen 100 (miles) The stability of the 953 frame and forks particularly downhill was amazing, and the 32 cog did no harm at all uphill. William

Light Blue enamel and white seems very popular at the moment and as you can see in the pictures makes for a very clean looking machine indeed. Equipment used Phil Wood Chris King and Nitto all adds up to a rather tasty bit of kit.

We had a lady in the shop today who bought her first Mercian 30 plus years ago. Every day she goes for a 25 mile ride before breakfast. Now well into her 70s is saving up for a new Mercian. Is that a great story or what.

Michael sent me this picture the other day of his King of Mercia in the back of his car. As you can see the S&S couplings have come in very handy. Please also note the belt drive with the Rohloff hub.
