We doff a very large cycling cap to Greg James, who finished his 8-day pan-UK challenge in Edinburgh on Friday raising over £4.5mln. What an incredible amount!
After six decades Mercian Cycles workshop has moved.
Through the years there were a number of locations in Derby for the shop, the frame building workshop and sprayshop. But since about 1965 the frame building and painting was taking place at the Pontefract Street workshop.
Framebuilder Tim took the chance to head out on the Ventura All-road bike to go and pick up some dropouts from Bear Frame Supplies. An ideal opportunity to capture some video of the custom steel Ventura out on the gravel trails of the Derbyshire Peak District.
Mercian has been hand-building steel bikes in Derby since 1946. Staff-owned and proud of our 80-year legacy, we remain dedicated to crafting one-off bikes the traditional way – by hand, for life.
To celebrate Derby County’s 50th anniversary title win – and Mercian’s 80th – we built a one-off Superlight road bike, raising nearly £4,000 for the Derby County Community Trust. A true Derby icon, made in Derby.
Dave’s custom Ventura Allroad – built for his Paris-to-Nice charity ride and dedicated to his son, Conor – has already raised over €21,000 for mental health charity Aware.
We had this registration number sent to us some years ago now, its from a Mercian owner from California who had it on his Honda car ( we had a photo of the car but lost it ) . The frame is being readied for a customer who should be happy with the finished item.

Thought you would like to have a look at this Lugless. Its built with Reynolds 853 oversize tubing . Light blue enamel with a white panel on the down tube and with the chrome crown I think it looks very nice indeed. Mainly built with Campagnolo equipment with Mercian built wheels.
Just before this Vincitore goes into the spray shop I though you would like to see the craftmanship that goes into the lug work. These lugs have been cut by hand from blanks all the work has been done in our own workshop here in Derby.
Just thought you would like a look at this Pro-Lugless in Pearl white with a leaf green pearl barbers pole and white transfers. Built with the Reynolds oversize 853 pro team tubing equipped with the Reynolds carbon forks and with a Chris King headset.
Well we must have made it big time . Jop Wielens of Digital Outlook sent us this link to a game which can be played online. They have had over 500,000 hits on the site !!!. The Mercian is in fact his own bike. Thank you Jop
Chris sent these pictures of the Mercian head crest he has had commissioned by his good friend Ryan, who is very gifted as you can see, the head crest is painted onto wood and looks the business! Ryan has in the past won the Northern Ireland TT 100 mile race. We certainly have talented friends and c
Another brighter finish our new Magenta Flam. As you will see by this very good picture ( cough ) that it has a very nice shine and depth and we think will become very popular. We are trying to get a few stock frames built so one will be in the shop soon in this colour to look at.
David sent me this picture of his end to end journey. As you can see by his smile he is very pleased with his epic ride as he should be. Well done David.
I have been told off by more than one of the lads here and customers for not updating the blog for a while so here you go. I have been very busy over the past week or so (horrid paperwork mainly) but slowly we are getting on top of it now. This is Tim`s bench I think he dodged the camera for this sh
